Families Waste £50 of Food Every Month

RecycleCharminster residents are being encouraged to think about how much food they throw out as national figures show the average family wastes £50 of food a month.

In Bournemouth a massive 38 per cent of all rubbish thrown in the Little Bin (refuse) is food and the Council’s Recycling Team is encouraging residents to think more about food waste to help reduce the amount and save money too. The Council is supporting the ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ campaign urging people to think about how they use shop, store and cook food items they buy.

Top Five Food Waste Tips

  1. Learn to use your freezer better
  2. Use an online portion calculator for items such as potatoes, rice pasta – often too much is cooked and thrown away.
  3. Plan a weekly menu and use it to draw up a shopping list
  4. Learn how to maximise your leftovers through recipe ideas found at www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/recipes
  5. Stock up your store cupboard on long life essentials and herbs and spices to jazz up everyday food items

Appointment of Musical Director at S. Francis of Assisi

Jonathan LaneThe Churchwardens and Parochial Church Council of the parish church of S. Francis if Assisi Bournemouth, are pleased to appoint Jonathan Lane as Director of Music.

Jonathan took up his position officially in January 2013, but also assisted for Christmas services that included Nine Lessons and Carols.

Jonathan has been involved with the church all of his life. He came from an evangelical background and has gradually moved towards ‘high’ Anglican church. From just a few years old he wanted to play the organ and worked hard to achieve this goal through his late teens and early twenties. Jonathan studied as a communication engineer before studying music at Goldsmith’s College, gaining a music degree and several diplomas. He enjoys music in the church enormously.

New Record in Green Waste Collection

Green Waste CollectionResidents disposed of a record 4,849 tonnes of garden waste in 2012 compared to 3,981 tonnes the year before.

The average household on the scheme recycled 173.2kg of green waste last year, meaning the borough is disposing even less waste in the rubbish bin with garden waste instead going for composting.

Now there are hopes for even greater results in 2013 as the Council has agreed all 1,300 people who were on the waiting list for a collection service will now join the scheme this Spring. It means 30,000 households in the town will now receive green waste collections.

Councillor Michael Filer, portfolio holder for Cleansing & Waste, said: “I am delighted to see so many residents of Bournemouth are keen gardeners and want to do the right thing when disposing of all their green waste. It is pleasing to be able to offer everyone on our waiting list the chance to join our green waste scheme as together we can recycle more and waste less. It means officially we are diverting 81 per cent of all Bournemouth’s waste from landfill with all indications showing that these figures are expected to improve even more this year.”
